Things in Port Charles just keep getting curiouser and curiouser. General Hospital’s Obrecht is back and we wondered if Josslyn’s questioning of Nathan would get her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about her son. Maybe, we suspected, it would lead her to exposing Cassius as a fraud and upend everything. But instead, we think it may have done the opposite!

After Monday’s episode, it almost feels like Obrecht already knows about Cassius — and is willfully keeping her mouth shut! We’re not saying it’s to help Sidwell and Cullum’s nefarious plot, but if what we suspect is true, Cassius may have someone else willing to work behind the scenes to do everything she can to keep his secret.

Because pretty much all of Obrecht’s reactions seemed off on Monday! She warned Josslyn away from investigating “Nathan,” and made it clear that asking too many questions could be, er, bad for her health! That almost felt like a mama bear going after anyone who came for her kids, but as soon as Joss was gone, Liesl seemed more shaken than she let on. And she immediately pulled up a photo of her and Nathan.

Then there was her whole interaction with “Nathan” and James. She was so happy to see them, but as she hugged “Nathan” and told him, “It’s good to be here.” She paused, and finally added, “My son,” and almost seemed sad. Still, she promised there was nothing wrong when Cassius asked if she was OK. All that mattered was that he and James needed each other and had each other. So long as they were both happy, all was well.

And when James asked his “dad” if he ever wished he had a brother — a “good” brother, not a bad one like Peter — Cassius wasn’t the only one looking uncomfortable! Obrecht was, too! But more than that, there was just a sadness that felt infused in every word and look Liesl had for her son, that we never really noticed before.

All this time, we’ve been asking ourselves how she could have not known she gave birth to twins. How did she not realize Cassius existed? Maybe we were asking the wrong question. Instead, it should have been: Why did she keep this a secret? Because suddenly, it seems like she knows more than she’s letting on?

What if she already knows that Nathan isn’t Nathan? What if she knows exactly who he is — but she’s so desperate to have her son back, she’d rather live with the lie than expose the truth? She may not know what “Nathan” is up to, but she knows that if he’s exposed, she’ll lose her son all over again. That could make her more dangerous than she has been in some time. She lost both children, and now that she has them back, we can imagine there’s virtually nothing Obrecht won’t do to keep it that way.

And that may be true even if one of her children is living a lie. Because if Nathan really is gone forever, Liesl may have decided that her other son, living as his good brother, may be the next best thing. And anyone — like Josslyn, for instance— threatening that security, might have more to fear than just the specter of Cesar Faison. Because once upon a time, Obrecht could go toe to toe with the villain in the worst ways possible.
