The Newmans have always walked a fine line on The Young and the Restless between heroes and villains. Well, mostly it’s been Victor, who’s walked that line, but at some point, just about all of his family has taken a walk on the dark side. Lately, though, it seems like the dark side is about all that’s left.

Victor’s running around, kidnapping folks willy-nilly without repercussions, sinking to just about any low that seems to strike his fancy. Victoria’s along for the ride and Claire doesn’t seem to have much appetite to fight her grandfather. And to top it all off, Victor and Nikki on the outs again! Despite all of Victor’s declarations that family is so important to him, it too often takes a back seat to revenge and corporate machinations.

If Young & Restless really wanted to shake things up and recalibrate the Newmans into a family folks actually cheer for again, there is one, shocking way right in front of us all: Matt Clark.

Nick Matt Y&R

Because if Matt’s plan actually works and Nick does OD, the Newmans would be devastated. Victor might finally realize how much time he’s wasted going after Jack and the Abbotts and not enjoying his family. It would be just about inevitable for him and Nikki to be drawn back together to mourn their son, and if it came with an attitude adjustment for The Mustache, they may actually be able to reconcile!

And we can’t imagine Victoria would continue down her cut-throat path, especially after all she’s been through, meeting her long-lost daughter, Claire, reuniting with and then losing Cole and then Nick?

At this point, the Newmans are becoming almost a caricature of themselves. When Adam becomes more of a voice of reason, it starts to feel like the family has lost its way.

We’re not saying we want Nick to die or for Joshua Morrow to leave at all, but we can’t help thinking about how it would shake Young & Restless, Genoa City and the Newman family to their core. And with how much goodwill’s been lost, that level of shock to the system may be just about the only way left to get it back.
